What does that even mean? When you pay attention to what you are already doing to take steps towards your goal, it helps you to see how every little bit counts. We often discount the small steps, and use negative self-talk such as, "Oh, I haven't done anything to start working on getting a new job," or, "I'll never be able to move because I'm too scared." Absolute statements that really aren't true.
Regarding taking steps to move-- can you start tracking the small steps such as editing your resume? Contacting a realtor? Researching locations? Talking to others who live there, or who work in the same industry, etc.? Reach out to Linked In contacts? And so forth. Just one thing. At a time. Small steps can lead to major progress.
So... isn't this tooting my own horn by writing down all the great stuff I'm doing? No. You're simply paying attention to what you ARE doing to reach your goal. When you have a visual of completed tasks, it really adds up. You can no longer buy into the idea that "you're not doing anything." Thus... the evidence.
Confidence comes from evidence and hope comes from struggle. What's the link? When we face struggle, we have to figure out how to get through the adversity. Once we do, we provide ourselves with evidence that we're capable. That evidence leads to confidence.
You have already survived adversity-- it's hard to get to this point in your life without having done so. Thus you already have evidence that you are a fighter, a survivor, a problem solver, are resilient, etc. It's just a matter of showing it to yourself. Proving it to the trash talker inside your head.
I suggest keeping an evidence journal to clients in individual sessions and groups all.the.time. Think about other arenas where "the professional" has you track things. A personal trainer will make you track your workouts. A nutritionist will make you track your food. A financial expert will want to see your income and expenses. A pool company will test and track your chemicals. Even with some things as intangible as emotions, there are still things to track, depending on what the goal is. It's not that different from other things. I created a template to help get you started if you need the extra push. I KNOW you can do it.
